How to Spot Medical Gaslighting
Learn how to recognize medical gaslighting—when doctors dismiss your symptoms or pain. Discover 7 signs and how to advocate for your health with confidence.
What Is Medical Gaslighting?
Medical gaslighting happens when a healthcare provider downplays, ignores, or outright dismisses a patient’s symptoms, making them feel like it’s “all in their head.” It’s not just frustrating—it can be dangerous. Delayed diagnoses, untreated illnesses, and emotional trauma often result from this kind of medical neglect.
At Superheroes Foundation, we hear this story too often—especially from women. That’s why we’re here to help you identify the red flags so you can stand in your truth and advocate for the care you deserve.
1. You’re Told “It’s Just Stress” (Without Proper Testing)
If you’re experiencing serious symptoms—chronic pain, fatigue, nausea, or other changes in your body—and your doctor quickly blames stress or anxiety without any testing, that’s a red flag. While stress can cause real symptoms, it should never be used as a catch-all diagnosis without investigation.
2. Your Pain Is Downplayed or Dismissed
Do you feel like your doctor doesn’t believe you when you say something hurts? Women in particular are often told they’re exaggerating or being “dramatic.” Pain is subjective, yes—but it’s also valid. If a provider brushes it off, that’s medical gaslighting.
3. You’re Not Taken Seriously Because of Your Gender or Age
“You’re just hormonal.” “It’s part of getting older.” These are phrases too many women hear in response to legitimate health concerns. If your doctor labels your symptoms as “normal for your age” without real evaluation, speak up—or seek a second opinion.
4. You’re Made to Feel Guilty or Embarrassed for Seeking Answers
If your provider implies that you’re being difficult, overreacting, or “wasting their time,” it can lead you to question yourself. This is a psychological tactic—whether intentional or not—that keeps patients silent. Your body is worth answers.
5. Your Symptoms Are Blamed on Mental Health Alone
Mental health matters—but it’s not always the root cause. If your doctor automatically prescribes antidepressants or anxiety medication without doing any physical exams or lab work, they may be bypassing real, physical causes for your symptoms.
6. You’re Rushed Through Appointments Without Being Heard
If you constantly feel like you’re being cut off, talked over, or brushed aside during visits, that’s a serious problem. A caring provider takes time to listen, not just prescribe.
7. You Feel Worse Over Time, But Your Concerns Are Ignored
You know your body better than anyone. If your symptoms are progressing and your doctor keeps saying “you’re fine,” trust your intuition. Medical gaslighting often causes people to doubt their reality. Don’t let it.
What to Do If You’re Being Gaslit by a Doctor
- Document Everything: Keep a symptom journal, note dates, and record what your doctor says.
- Get a Second (or Third) Opinion: Don’t hesitate to consult a different provider—especially one who listens.
- Bring an Advocate: A friend, family member, or patient advocate can help support your voice in the room.
- Trust Your Instincts: You are not overreacting. You are not imagining things. You deserve to be heard.
